about

new artist direct (via FGS) ep. CRYSTALLINE PRICKLE.

The title track "Crystalline Prickle" opens the record with a swarm of digital tones violently twisting as the back drop for music that could well be a lullaby. The collision of delicate melodies and shredded textures is anchored by a steady and propulsive beat. Slowly new shades of the melody are added, and by the time everything comes together we are treated to a sublime moment showing Accelera Deck is not afraid to let the melody shine.
"Summerswell Harbor" features a slower tempo and simpler structure replete with tiny drum rolls and skitters. The beat eventually breaks down and becomes slippery with flashes of retro hand claps and classic 80's electronic drum sounds. Finally the beat settles down with some new rhythmic filtering and more skitters. After the beat ends, the melody is extended and eventually swallowed in a haze of reverb.
Closing song "Turn Up For Joy" [please do turn up for joy!] showcases a truly funky and generative tune complete with a quirky and playful melody. The song is cut from an infinite groove that has no beginning or end but as you listen close there are continual changes to the tone, and texture of the song. The brief ruptures enter and disappear quickly creating a sense of anticipation as to what variation we will hear next. A swoosh of reverb, a rubbery bending of the pitch and tempo or a live dj style drop out of the bass?

This is the first newly recorded material from Accelera Deck since the Tumult ep in 2017 [excluding archival releases], which prior to that, his last release with beats on it was 2001's Digital Headrest. Crystalline Prickle is a worthy entry in the Accelera Deck canon and we hope to hear more - Extended Sounds 'zine June 2020

..]here is 'Crystalline Prickle', with brand-new pieces and there is a cassette of archive material. Jeely is back to the world of rhythmic music! I must admit I enjoyed this stuff some 20 years ago when I was more interested in the world of rhythmic music. The 3 new tracks are fine reminders of the original sound of Accelera Deck. The music is jumpy, bouncing around in what seems to be broken up rhythms & perhaps it is not always something one can dance too, but at the same time, it is also so utterly groove. 'Turn Up For Joy' has a shaky basis, stuttering melodic lines & beats, seems very minimal, but yet it is true out very captivating. The title track, on the other hand, has a pretty straight forward beat and some pleasant melodic punches, while 'Summerswelll Harbor' has some very retro beats and here the synthesizers are nasty and take over until the beat has disappeared. It is an excellent return to form.
And if you wonder what that form was, go to the Bandcamp page listed here and check out some of his other stuff. (FdW) Vital Weekly 1254
